Lebanese Amphora Manufacturing Process
The Challenge
Lebanese wineries rely on amphorae imported from Italy and Georgia to age their wine. Lebanon has no validated local process for making them. Vigna Verde needed to know whether Lebanese clay could make amphorae that meet strict requirements for strength, porosity, and firing.
Our Solution
LAUIH ran a feasibility and process-development project. The work included clay screening and benchmarking of Italian and Georgian methods. It also included material testing, prototype development, and process optimization. The team tested Lebanese clay, Italian ceramic soil, and hybrid mixes. They measured drying and firing. They also measured shrinkage, permeability, and structural stability.
The Results
After repeated trials, the team developed a 50/50 Lebanese-Italian hybrid clay mix. It produced two structurally sound amphora prototypes with no large cracks, stable geometry, and no moisture migration. Vigna Verde received a validated roadmap for the first locally made wine amphorae in Lebanon.
