Recycled Sheet Process Optimization

The Plastc Lab
EBRD Innovation Programme
Renewables & Sustainability
2025

The Challenge

PlastcLab’s recycled HDPE sheets had quality problems. Heating was uneven, cooling was uncontrolled, and pressure was not uniform. This caused warping, defects, and uneven thickness from run to run.

Our Solution

LAUIH delivered engineering backed by simulation. The work included site visits, equipment analysis, and SOLIDWORKS thermal and structural simulations. We redesigned the process for heating, pressing, cooling, alignment, and material preparation.

The Results

Simulation showed that pressing at several points cuts sheet deformation from 1.4 mm to 0.4 mm. That is a 71% improvement. PlastcLab received a science-based roadmap. It covers multi-zone heating, spread-out pressing, water-assisted cooling, flake drying, and standard shredding.

How we deliver projects like this

LAU Industrial Hub projects are delivered by on-demand multidisciplinary teams of faculty leads, alumni seniors, and student contributors, assembled to fit each project. Work runs as a fixed-scope or milestone-based engagement under NDA-first controls, and partners keep full intellectual property on deliverables.
